Leveraging AI, including the new Gemini models, Google Maps now provides real-time map updates, curated inspiration, stops, enhanced road signs/lanes/walks, weather views and immersive views of landmarks with parking.
Curated Inspiration with Gemini
Gemini’s new integration in Google Maps allows users to explore curated suggestions for outings by simply asking Maps for inspiration. For example, asking for “things to do with friends at night” will generate ideas like speakeasies or live music. Powered by advanced summarization and creation capabilities, Gemini filters through community-driven insights on over 250 million places, available now in the U.S. on Android and iOS.
Streamlined Driving and Navigation
Google is introducing a major update designed to make driving easier from start to finish.
Users can now explore along their route even before hitting the road. In directions user “tap “add stops” to view top landmarks, attractions, scenic spots, and dining options, all to help plan the ideal drive.
Driving in unfamiliar areas with multiple lanes, forks, and exits can sometimes be challenging. To help drivers anticipate these, Google’s enhanced navigation now clearly shows lanes, crosswalks, and road signs on the map. And to avoid last-minute merges, users will see exactly which lane to be in, just by following the blue line in the lane markers while navigating.
Also, Google Maps provides more ways to keep drivers informed. With winter approaching, users will now be able to view and report weather disruptions along their routes, including flooded, unplowed, or low-visibility roads, helping everyone travel more safely.
Google Maps will show nearby parking lots and remind user to save their parking location.t. Once parked, users can get walking directions from the car to the entrance — and even enter Street View or AR walking navigation.
Expanded Immersive View
Immersive View now covers 150 cities globally, allowing users to preview stadiums, parks, and routes under specific weather and traffic conditions. This update includes new categories like college campuses and complex route details, such as parking and challenging turns, to make exploration easier.
New features will be updated in the U.S. on Android and iOS this week, while enhanced navigation launches next month in over 30 metro areas. With Gemini’s intelligent guidance and immersive features, Google Maps redefines the travel and navigation experience.
Waze Updated Too with Oral Accident Reporting:
Waze enhanced it driver safety with two new features that make reporting road incidents easier and add school zones to the map.
With Conversational Reporting, users can now report incidents by speaking naturally. For example, drivers spotting a sudden slowdown can simply say, “Looks like cars are jammed up ahead!” Waze, powered by Gemini technology, will understand and log the report, even prompting for details if needed. This feature is rolling out in beta globally to English-speaking testers, with further expansion planned.
Also, Waze is adding School Zones to improve safety near schools. Map editors can designate these zones, and drivers will receive alerts when approaching schools during open hours, reminding them to drive carefully. School Zones will be available on Android and iOS later this year.
